Lets hear from our students....

Lets hear from some of our students....

"I wanted to apply for the Canada trip first off so I could expand on my knowledge on different ELC & Education settings. In my future role as an EYP there may be opportunities of living abroad and travelling so this trip will be a great first step for me to get a true grasp as to whether that is something I’d want. On a personal level, I’m also hoping this trip boosts my confidence, helps me step out of my comfort zone, allows me to make new friends and gain new experiences! Really looking forward to seeing what this trip has to offer us".

"I am a mature student at Borders College in Scotland studying HND Business. I returned to college last year and passed the NC Business and Enterprise course. After having spent 12 years working in Hospitality to fit around my children and growing a cleaning business locally with my partner, my experience at this college has inspired me to retrain as a college lecturer.

I left school early with few qualifications and went straight into work. I now have two beautiful girls and an incredibly supportive partner, so I am in an ideal place to be able to focus on my career.

I can not wait to take part in the international excursion trip to Canada, as this will give me the opportunity to meet new and interesting people in a similar learning environment. We will be able to share experiences and compare studying techniques, hopefully benefiting the students from both countries. As Class Representative, bringing back innovative ideas and creative methods of learning to my fellow students is a motive for this excursion. Having first hand international learning experience will be invaluable to my career and my future students. Within my course, there are currently no opportunities for work placements, therefore I am viewing this trip to Centennial College as a learning experience out with the Borders College environment."

- Claire, who is studying for her HND Business.

"I have a real interest in learning about various cultures and countries and seeing what they do similar but also what they do differently, I would also love to experience what life is like for people in a different country and see what it is like to live there for a time. I would also like to experience studying abroad as it is something I am considering in the future if the chance for such an opportunity is presented to me, and I feel this would be an excellent opportunity for me to get a taste of what to expect and develop an understanding of what goes into making a chance like this works. I would also like to use this experience as an opportunity to represent the Borders College and show the students at Centennial College what the Borders College has to offer and what the goals and values are for the college as well as share my experience from the College. After Covid many of us experienced a time stuck indoors and unable to live a proper life and I feel now that travel is allowed this would help in allowing me a chance to experience a unique life and help in developing my skills I have as well as give me the chance to learn new ones. What I hope to gain from this is a new and deeper understanding of what it is like for people studying in Toronto and what sort lives they life and experience, I would also like to learn about the local area and what they see as their goals and values as well as experience what the area has to offer. I would like to learn new skills and experience what studying is like in a different country and discover new ways of studying. I would also hope to be able to share my experiences with others and show what you can learn and develop from being on an international study."

- Kriss, who is studying for his Business and Enterprise Level 6 Award.

"As a mature student who has already taken the opportunity to travel, I am keenly aware of the possibilities that it offers. Learning about new cultures, countries and ways of life is a passion of mine but it is also clear to me how much I have grown personally through my time living and working in New ZealandI am currently studying HND in Animal Care and Welfare at Borders College subsequent to having qualified as an Animal Nursing Assistant from SRUC in 2019. I would love to go to Canada to further my experience of travelling and experiencing other countries and cultures.

My time at college has made it clear that there are a diverse range of career paths open to me when I graduate. However, a consistent theme for me has been a desire to work with wildlife in a rehabilitation setting. I specifically loved the wildlife content that was in the HNC course and have gained an interest in rehabilitation specifically, independently studying different vocations such as laser therapy, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy. I love the opportunity to travel round Canada and work in different wildlife rehabilitation centers, to be able to work with animals such as moose, eagles and bears has been a dream since I was young. To do so within Canada I would need to complete and pass the Ontario wildlife rehabilitation exam to be able to work in this field in the future. Getting experience first-hand during the trip to some local rehabilitation centers would be great experience to add to my CV so that I could be considered for this in the future. There are lots of wildlife rehabilitation centers in Toronto, a few of which are in close proximity to Centennial college. Living in Canada has always been a long-term ambition of mine.

Centennial College’s vocational approach to education is very appealing to me. My research into the college has clearly demonstrated that they have a commitment to seeing all a student’s experience (not purely education) as a critical part of their makeup. As a mature student who has returned to education this approach is hugely valuable even if I am only able to experience this for a short while. The colleges inclusivity ensures that students physical as well as mental wellbeing are a priority and looked after by the college. "

- Emma, who is studying for her HND in Animal care and welfare.

Passports at the ready!

Passports at the ready! Ten students and two members of staff,   have been selected for a trip to Canada, funded by the UK Government’s Turing Scheme, have been meeting recently to prepare for jetting off in May to attend  Centennial College  in Toronto. The students are from a range of faculties including cyber security, childcare, motor vehicle, business and enterprise and animal care, and include both full and part-time students and apprentices. There will be opportunities for sightseeing, social events and learning about the lifestyle, culture and customs of Canada. A great chance to develop students as Global Citizens. Centennial College is recognised as one of the most culturally diverse colleges in Canada, welcoming more than 14,000 international and exchange students in 2022. I am soo excited and grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend this international trip and strive to make it one to remember for every one of the students attending.
