Moving to Progress Campus

 And we have arrived!  We made the move from the University of Toronto Chestnut Residences, to Progress Campus at Centennial College. 

Students woke up - packed their cases, had breakfast and ordered Ubers to the College. We learned from our last journey with suitcases - the Subway was not the easiest. 

Today we arrived at Centennial College and were greeted by faculty, we then had a presentation about the area of Scarborough where we are staying and how to navigate the college- this again started with a land acknowledgement.

We had a look around, within an hour of being there students took part in a fire evacuation of the whole college - learning about the health and safety procedures.

Classes then commenced and we got settled into our new rooms. Students had free time tonight to familiarise themselves with the campus and surrounding area. Looking forward to see what this week's schedule brings for students!

Everyone is looking forward to attending their classes and meeting so many new people.

Animal Welfare

Toronto Wildlife Centre which is the only wildlife center in all of Toronto. We unfortunately were not able to get a behind the scenes tour but there were three observation windows in the back of the center, one had a view into the operating room, there were no operations being performed but it was really interesting to be able to see the set up and how it was different to the set-up of some of the operating rooms I have seen in Scotland. Passports at the ready!

Passports at the ready! Ten students and two members of staff,   have been selected for a trip to Canada, funded by the UK Government’s Turing Scheme, have been meeting recently to prepare for jetting off in May to attend  Centennial College  in Toronto. The students are from a range of faculties including cyber security, childcare, motor vehicle, business and enterprise and animal care, and include both full and part-time students and apprentices. There will be opportunities for sightseeing, social events and learning about the lifestyle, culture and customs of Canada. A great chance to develop students as Global Citizens. Centennial College is recognised as one of the most culturally diverse colleges in Canada, welcoming more than 14,000 international and exchange students in 2022. An Induction to Indigenous Populations

 Yesterday Team Canada had an information session on 'An Induction to Indigenous Populations'. So what does Indigenous mean?  The term indigenous refers to, or relates to, the people who originally lived in a place, rather than the people who moved there from somewhere else.  In Canada this refers to the First Nations, Inuit and Metis people.  There are more than 630 First Nation communities in Canada, which represent more than 50 Nations and 50 Indigenous languages.    In the 2021 census by  Statistics Canada , over 1.8 million people in Canada identified as Indigenous, making up 5 per cent of the national population.  First Nations – traditionally lived south of the treeline (the edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing) and south of the Arctic Circle.
